For less severe jaw issues, orthodontics alone can often correct the problem, but when jaw abnormalities or jaw injuries are more serious, oral and maxillofacial surgeons have the proper training and experience to make the corrections surgically. Drs. Friedman, Schulhof, and Montazem are uniquely qualified to perform the full range of corrective jaw procedures for the very best jaw function and aesthetic results in the safety and comfort of our of our affiliated hospitals. We perform corrective surgery both in New Jersey and in New York City at Mount Sinai Medical Center.
If any of the following difficulties apply to you, you may be a candidate for corrective jaw surgery, and we encourage you to schedule an examination so that your condition can be evaluated by one of our oral surgeons:
Your questions and concerns will be addressed during your consultation and exam with your oral surgeon, and you will be presented with your options for care at our practice. If corrective jaw surgery is recommended for you, the team at North Jersey Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery will take the very best care of you every step of the way.
Our jaw surgery patients have the best outcomes with the least invasive procedures possible. This type of surgery is often very gratifying for patients because many of them experience a healthy, symmetrical, or functional jaw structure for the very first time in their lives. The corrective jaw surgery process is often a collaboration between your oral surgeon, your dentist, and your orthodontist and usually occurs over a period several months. It begins with braces and ends with the surgical alignment of your jaws under anesthesia — most often general anesthesia so that you will not be aware of the surgery taking place and will not feel any sensation of pain.
After surgery, patients typically recover at home for two weeks to one month while the jaw bone heals. It may take a couple of months to return to a normal diet, but our patients usually find that their recoveries are shorter than they expect. Our team will provide you with detailed pre- and post-operative instructions and a prescription for any medications you will need for an optimal recovery. You will have regular appointments with both our office and your orthodontist for follow-up care.
